Description:
The Instructor will oversee all academic duties for teaching the Mathematical Reasoning for the Sciences (MTH) course, including lesson planning, instruction, grading, feedback, and office hours for two sections of Summer Academy students - students in their first summer of the program and students in their second summer of the program (Summer I and Summer II).
The course will involve approximately 37 contact hours, with exact hours determined during the hiring process by early Spring 2024.The Instructor will also support programmatic activities throughout the length of the appointment (including weekends) and participate in selection activities and graduation events as needed.
Length of Appointment
- Summer Session: Five weeks from approximately July 7 - August 8, 2025
- Approximately two meetings prior to the summer session’s start for orientation activities
Principal Responsibilities
The job’s activities in terms that enable someone who knows nothing about the job to understand what is done in each activity.
- Teach the MTH course to two sections - the Classes of 2025 (Summer II) and 2026 (Summer I) in Abu Dhabi
- Work within the existing MTH curriculum, which is focused on math foundations for the sciences. Areas of study include: algebra & functions, system of equations & vectors, Geometry & Trigonometry, introductory probability and statistics, Logic & paradoxes, test practice and other advanced math topics as needed.
- Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
- Work closely with the other MTH instructor(s) to ensure that both cohorts and all sections receive the same material delivered with a similar high-quality approach
- Supervise and coordinate instruction with teaching assistants(s)
- Be available to individual students and groups in need of assistance, as well as to other instructors undertaking cross-curricular or collaborative projects
- Provide students with ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) during the course
- Participate in faculty meetings by providing detailed feedback on student progress
- Following the summer session, submit extensive and detailed written feedback on each student to be used in crafting letters of recommendation for their college applications (within 30 days)
- Attend and provide assistance as needed with co-curricular events and activities throughout the summer session, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting the operations of the program as needed
- Oversee and support students during assigned day trips, extracurricular activities, and events, ensuring a safe and engaging environment that promotes learning and development
