The role

Within the university’s academic community, you will be making a positive, significant and strategic contribution to the teaching, research and enterprise leadership of the Faculty of Business and Law (BAL) at our Dubai campus. You will develop and lead plans for the continued development and growth of the BAL portfolio, working closely with the Head of Dubai Campus, Subject Leads and relevant colleagues in the UK. Your responsibilities will be inherently of a management nature and therefore the post holder will be an active and engaged member of the Dubai management and teaching teams.

You will act as a line manager within the BAL faculty, including providing support to the recruitment, appointment and onboarding of Dubai based teaching teams. You will also be involved in all aspects of line management, such as recruitment, performance management, workload/resource management, objective setting and appraisals.

You will establish and build upon relationships with the appropriate subject teams and play an active role in the student journey. You will also provide quality oversight of the programmes and monitoring of the application of quality assurance and enhancement procedures to ensure the correct processes are being followed and timely intervention occurs where appropriate.

The person

You will be an accomplished academic with proven expertise in the delivery of education for the international HE Sector. As a leading authority and scholar in a relevant subject area, you will have a notable national or international reputation. You must have significant experience of leading, mentoring and supervising academic staff in an international context and demonstrate the interpersonal skills required to influence, motivate and encourage a culture of inclusivity.

You must be comfortable and proactive in providing colleagues with relevant support, advice and guidance for their academic roles as they develop collaborative programmes that are popular with international students and in keeping with culturally diverse environments. You will therefore be an emotionally intelligent communicator across and within many cultural environments.

You will have significant UK experience of leading teaching and learning, research and/or enterprise strategies. This will include curriculum and programme management, the development of innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, the development of academic standards, and developing and leading research and enterprise strategies to maximise student opportunities, and contribute to the sustainable growth and reputation of the Dubai campus.

You will also demonstrate the operational leadership attributes required to oversee and develop curricula that contribute to the university’s reach and influence within Dubai, developing the capability and capacity necessary to promote the faculty and DMU on a local, national and global stage. This will incorporate the development of initiatives that enhance teaching quality and the learning environment, and lead to improvements in student retention, progression, attainment and satisfaction.

The role holder will be expected to work flexibly to allow for time differences and differences in working week patterns.

Overall purpose of the role

The role will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the relevant faculty at the DMU Dubai campus, including providing oversight across all areas of provision, viz. teaching and learning (UG and PG level), research, and enterprise. This role will also lead plans within the faculty for the continued development and growth of the portfolio, working closely with the Head of Dubai Campus, Subject Leads/Heads, and Link Tutors in the UK. The responsibilities of the post are inherently of a management nature and therefore the post holder will be an active and engaged member of the Dubai management and teaching teams.

The role holder will act as a line manager for all Subject Leads/Heads within the relevant faculty, to include all aspects of line management, such as recruitment, performance management, workload/resource management, objective setting and appraisals

Main duties and responsibilities

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP AND MANAGERIAL

  • Work closely with the Head of Dubai Campus with plans for recruitment, appointment and onboarding of Dubai based teaching teams related to portfolio specialisms.
  • Work closely with the Head of Dubai Campus to develop and lead relevant aspects of the campus strategic plan as agreed.
  • Effectively manage academic colleagues and/or projects and engage in curriculum development activities including implementation of the Dubai Collaborative Management Handbook and adherence to institutional academic policies or other initiatives that enhance the university’s sector standing and reputation within Dubai and internationally.
  • Act as a role model and academic exemplar to others – provide support, expert advice and mentoring to staff and students
  • Support the Dubai regulator, KHDA audit preparations, including outputs and impact.
  • Through university and academic leadership activities make a significant contribution to teaching excellence, and research and enterprise activities to enhance the reputation of the Dubai campus.
  • Participate in the Dubai Academic Management committee and chair faculty team meetings and groups as appropriate.
  • Have a strong academic profile – be a leading authority and scholar in the relevant subject with a considerable national or international reputation.
  • Attend and deliver presentations at national and international conferences and similar events.
  • In addition to the academic leadership and managerial duties, the post holder will undertake academic duties focussed on teaching, learning and scholarship, as follows:
  • Support the DMU teaching and learning strategy, including the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning and assessment, and the development of academic standards.
  • Lead subject teams in their development of high-quality teaching and learning approaches, including implementing staff development opportunities.
  • Oversee and develop curricula that contribute to the university’s reach and influence within Dubai, developing the capability and capacity necessary to promote the subject area and DMU on a local, national and global stage.
  • Initiate and develop initiatives that enhance teaching quality and the learning environment, and lead to improvements in student retention, progression, attainment and satisfaction.
  • Support the subject areas and associated programme teams in the understanding and implementation of DMU regulations, processes and procedures as developed for use in Dubai.
  • Respond to issues raised by course team and liaise with other University
  • staff to elicit responses and support as necessary, and ensure that contacts are maintained with relevant central departments (e.g. DAQ, SAAS).
  • Direct the faculty team to staff development opportunities, including those available at DMU and as part of the appraisal process.
  • Play an active role in course enhancement to ensure the ongoing currency of the programmes and support the programme teams in preparing for course re-approvals and formal reviews.
  • Ensure that the programmes are operating in accordance with the Faculty and University quality assurance requirements

OTHER

  • Ensure that the university’s strategic equality plans are in place and provide regular reports on progress.
  • Have overall responsibility for health and safety in own area.
  • Support key university activities and events, for example, attending DMU Dubai open days, and graduation ceremonies, which may require attendance in the evening or on weekends.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably required from time to time
