Description:
The functions of the laboratory teaching assistant are to provide instruction, implementation, supervision, and assistance, as required, to the students in the labs pertaining to Biology and Chemistry Courses. The proper performance of these duties requires the undivided attention of the teaching assistant during each laboratory period.
Areas of Responsibility
- It is the responsibility of the teaching assistant to become thoroughly familiar with the policies and procedures of the stockroom, to support these policies, and to work within these procedures in his/her dealings with the students in his/her laboratory sections.
- Prior to the beginning of the laboratory period & at the end, the laboratory and equipment rooms should be inspected to make sure they are clean and orderly.
- A check should be made to ensure that all the required reagents, equipment and supplies are available and in sufficient quantity.
- The inventory must be maintained and replenished according to policies and procedures.
- During the early part of the laboratory period, the teaching assistant should determine that each student has the necessary equipment and that it is assembled properly.
- The TA should circulate through the laboratory during the period to determine that each student does the assigned work in an acceptable manner, and to answer any questions which the students may ask.
- Prepare lab equipment for upcoming research experiments.
- Report data and compile information into graphs and documents.
- Use testing items and subjects to gather results.
- Gather data and information from test subjects.
- Monitor ongoing tests and experiments, noting any differences.
- Support Faculty in Research.
- Preparation of laboratory exercises in conjunction with the course syllabus and lectures.
- Proctor laboratory practical exams.
- Grade assignments, quizzes, practical/exams, remediations and other assessments.
- Perform other duties within the scope of this position that are deemed necessary to fulfil the mission of the Department of environmental Health Sciences.
Qualification and Experience
The minimum amount of education and experience that an individual needs in order to successfully perform the essential duties of the position is as follows:
Required
- Master’s degree or equivalent from a well reputable university in a life science field (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences)
- Working experience in labs (at least 3 years working experience in labs)
Preferred
- University Ranking within 600th
- Experience in human body dissection, specimen preparations, chemical composition
- Teaching in an academic laboratory setting
- Knowledge of medical terminology or clinical anatomy
- Canadian Affiliation
